Ruaha National Park is the second largest park in Tanzania after Nyerere Park. Usangu game reserve added an important wetland to the park and increased its size to about 20,226 km2, making it the largest national park in East Africa. The park is located in central Tanzania, 128 km west of Iringa.

Ruaha’s name is derived from the Great Ruaha River, which flows along its southeastern margin. A fine network of game-viewing roads follows the Great Ruaha and its seasonal tributaries where during the dry season Impala and Waterbuck and other antelopes risk their lives for a sip of water.

The park is part of the 45,000 km2 area of the Rungwa-Kizigo-Muhesi ecosystem which includes the Rungwa game reserve, the Kizigo and Muhesi game reserve, the Mbomipa wildlife management area, and several other protected areas.
