Tarangire National Park

Overview

Duration

2 to 4days

Total Number of People = 1 to 50pax

Tarangire lies to the south of the large open grassland plains of southern Maasai land, covering an area of 2,600 km2 and 15 km from Arusha town via the Dodoma-Arusha highway.

The park is commonly known for tree-climbing python, zebra, hartebeest (kongoni), elephant, buffalo, waterbuck, and gazelle. The swamp is green year-round and is the focus for 550 birds, making it the most breeding species in one habitat anywhere in the world. Termite mounds are often frequented by colonies of the endearing dwarf mongoose, and pairs of red-and-yellow barbet, which draw attention to themselves by their loud, clockwork-like dueting.

During the rainy season, these seasonal visitors scatter over a 20,000 km2 range until they exhaust the green plain and the river calls once more. But elephants are easily encountered during dry or wet seasons. The best time to visit is during the dry season of June-September for the sheer number of animals. It is possible to do walking safaris and day trips to Maasai and Barbaig villages as well as to hundreds of ancient rock painting in the vicinity of Kolo on the Dodoma road. The park is easily reachable by road or charter flights.
